European Doctoral Degree (3rd Cycle) – European PhD

The European PhD is a Doctoral degree awarded by European universities.

Qualifying conditions

– Registration as a PhD student at Universidade de Lisboa (ULisboa);

– Attendance for a study or research period at a university in another European country, as part of their thesis preparation, with a minimum of one trimester, by agreement between ULisboa and the respective foreign university;

– Presentation of proof of the study that was carried out, as described in the previous paragraph, together with a certificate issued by the respective foreign university;

– Existence of two favourable opinions regarding the acceptance of their doctoral thesis, which have been issued by professors that belong to two non-Portuguese universities from two European countries;

– Participation as a member of a Doctoral viva voce jury from a non-Portuguese university;

– Part of this Doctoral viva voce has to have been made in an official EU language other than Portuguese.

Process Instruction

– Draw up a specific agreement before the research period, between ULisboa and the host institution;

–  Deliver all the above-mentioned documentation that is required to qualify for a European PhD, together with a written request addressed to the Rector of ULisboa for one of the following Faculties:

– If the application is approved, then a certificate will be issued attesting a “European PhD Title”.
