History

The Universidade de Lisboa  (ULisboa) founded on July 2013 has been the result of a merger process between the former Technical University of Lisbon  (UTL) and the University of Lisbon (UL). ULisboa extends the continuity of both institutions recognized scientific and cultural traditions.

As a privileged space of science and knowledge, the ULisboa is today, one of the major institutions of Higher Education in Europe and one of  the leading University in the country.

ULisboa is deeply involved with Portuguese society and with Lisbon Metropolitan Area. So we cannot dissociate ULisboa from the city where it is situated – Lisboa.

In 1288, the first Portuguese University was established in Lisbon. In 1537, the University was transferred to Coimbra. From the late eighteenth century, higher education was reestablished in the capital, Lisbon.  With the first Republic ,  in 1911,  University of Lisbon was born and, later on, in 1930, was founded, the Technical University of Lisbon , both resulting from more than seven centuries of history. History that was heritage by the ULisboa .

Foundation of  Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning of University of Lisbon.
Division of the Faculty of Psychology and the Institute of Education of  University of Lisbon.

1992

Faculty of Fine Arts and Faculty of Dental Medicine joined University of Lisbon.

1982

Foundation of the Institute of Social Sciences of  University of Lisbon.

1980

Foundation of the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of  University of Lisbon.

1979

Foundation of the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Lisbon from the split of Architecture section of the Faculty of Fine Arts of Lisbon.

1975

Foundation of the Higher Institute of Physical Education of Technical University of Lisbon from the National Institute of Physical Education.

1974

School for Social Sciences and Overseas Politics became the Institute of Social and Political Sciences (ISCSP).

1972

Institute of Economic and Financial Sciences became the Institute of Economics.

1961

Institute of Overseas Studies joined Technical University of Lisbon and  became the School of Social Sciences and Overseas Politics.

1957

School of Fine Arts of Lisbon became the Faculty of Fine Arts of Lisbon.

1954

Colonial Faculty became the Institute of Overseas Studies.

1940

Foundation of the National Institute of Physical Education.

1930

Normal School of the University of Lisbon was extinguished and the course of Pedagogical Sciences was created at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.
Foundation of Technical University of Lisbon from the merger of the High School of Veterinary Medicine; the School of Agriculture (ISA); the Higher Institute of Economic and Financial Sciences (former School of Commerce); and the School of Engineering (IST).

1926

Colonial School became the Colonial Faculty.

1920

Foundation of the Faculty of Pharmacy of  the University of Lisbon from the School of Pharmacy.

1918

School of Veterinary Medicine became the High School of Veterinary Medicine.

1913

Foundation of the Faculty of Law and Normal School within University of Lisbon.

1911

Foundation of University of Lisbon from the merger of Faculty of Medicine (former Medical-Surgical School), Faculty of Sciences (former Polytechnic School) and Faculty of Arts and Humanities (former Arts and Humanities Degree).
The School of Commerce and School of Engineering were created from the division of the Industrial and Commercial Institute of Lisbon.

1910

Foundation of the School of Veterinary Medicine and the School of Agriculture from the former Institute of Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine.

1906

Foundation of the Colonial School.

1886

General Institute of Agriculture became the Institute of Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine.

1881

Foundation of the School of Fine Arts of Lisbon from the Academy of Fine Arts of Lisbon.

1869

Commercial School joined the Industrial Institute of Lisbon, which became known as the Industrial and Commercial Institute of Lisbon (ICIL).

1864

Agricultural Institute of Lisbon becomes the General Institute of Agriculture.

1859

Foundation of the Arts and Humanities degree in Lisbon.

1855

Veterinary Medicine School joined the Agricultural Institute of Lisbon.

1852

Foundation of the Agricultural Institute of Lisbon.
Foundation of the Industrial Institute of Lisbon.

1844

The Commerce Class joined the Lisbon High School.
Conservatory of Arts and Crafts of Lisbon joined the Polytechnic School of Lisbon.

1837

Foundation of the Polytechnic School of Lisbon.

1836

Foundation of the Fine Arts Academy of Lisbon from the Figure Drawing and Civil Architecture Class.
Foundation of the Conservatory of Arts and Crafts of Lisbon.
Lisbon’s Royal School of Surgery becomes the Medical-Surgical School of Lisbon.
Foundation of the School of Pharmacy close to the Medical-Surgical School of Lisbon.

1830

Foundation of the Veterinary Medicine School.

1825

Foundation of Lisbon’s Royal School of Surgery.

1781

Foundation of Figure Drawing and Civil Architecture Class (commonly known as the Class of Doodle).
