Recent experience with major disasters and terrorist attacks, the urgency of humanitarian aid and the impact of climate change have made clear the need to develop the skills of professionals to respond effectively in these crisis and emergency situations in order to reduce their negative consequences. This master's degree has as its general objective to contribute to an improvement in the professional effectiveness of its participants, providing them with a solid scientific knowledge in the area of psychology that allows them to face the demands of work in emergency and crisis situations. This master's degree is relevant for psychologists who work or want to work in institutions with responsibilities in intervention in crisis and emergency situations or other professionals – engineers, doctors, nurses and journalists – who work in these institutions and want to complement their skills with scientific knowledge of psychology in the area.
The Master in Psychology in Crisis and Emergency presents a curricular structure organized in semesters. In the 1st year with three compulsory Curricular Units (UC) and two optional UC in each of the semesters and in the 2nd year with Dissertation or Project Seminar and Internship.
The Master in Psychology in Crisis and Emergency has the following learning objectives (knowledge, skills and competences) to be developed by students:
Demonstrate knowledge about the national and international code of ethics and standard of conduct for action in the area of crisis and emergency;
Update and deepen contributions of psychology to research, understanding and intervention in the management phases of a crisis and emergency situation (risk reduction, response and recovery);
Develop and improve psychological assessment and intervention skills in crisis and emergency situations in order to develop the resilience of actors and communities;
Foster the collaboration of specialists from various disciplinary areas, in an integration of knowledge and practices, for the development of research and intervention in this field;
To stimulate in the participants reflection, self-regulation and personal knowledge as professionals in crisis intervention."
