Biomedical Engineering focuses on the development of new innovative technological solutions to solve problems in sectors such as healthcare, fundamental medicine and clinical medicine. A biomedical engineer is capable of: designing new equipment for medical imagiology, biomedical devices; producing biomaterials; developing management health systems support tools; or even developing new applications by using cell and tissue engineering for diagnosis, follow-up and medical treatment.

The Biomedical Engineering undergraduate programme is a joint initiative of Instituto Superior Técnico and the Faculty of Medicine of University of Lisbon.

Objectives

This study cycle (SC) has two major objectives:
• Providing the students with a solid background in Mathematics and fundamental sciences, namely in Physics,
Chemistry, Biology and Medicine, which are the main pillars of the course. This widerange scientific background is essential due to the interdisciplinary nature of the course, the versatility of its students and the characteristics of the labor market.
• Providing the students with the basics and fundamental knowledge of the main themes that will be core in the 2nd SC. Thus, 6 UCs (designated pre-profile) are included in the curricular plan that will address the basics in some of these topics, such as computing, biomechanics, biosignals, tissue engineering and clinical engineering/management.

The curriculum also includes a set of restricted choices, which gives students freedom (and responsibility) to deepen topics of interest, namely in the areas of specialization that they intend to attend in the 2nd SC.

Career prospects
This study cycle (SC) in Biomedical Engineering, proposed in collaboration with FMUL, aims to bridge the areas of Engineering and Medicine, and to provide students with a solid and thorough background in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry Computation andBiology, as well as Medical Sciences and Engineering. In this context of Engineering applied to Life and Health Sciences, a special emphasis will be paid to high tech methods of diagnosis and therapy, tissue regeneration, instrumentation and biomedical devices, and biomechanics. Although this program per se allows to train professionals with appealing skills to the job market either in companies, industry or hospital environment, the most important goal of this SC is to provide students with a solid technical and scientific background to prepare them to the second cycle of studies where they will get additional competences to pursuit successfully their professional carriers in the field of Biomedical Engineering.
