The Shanghai Ranking is one of the most influential and prestigious ranking systems of Higher Education institutions.

In 2019, Universidade de Lisboa reinforced its prominent position once again on a national level, standing among the 200 best Universities worldwide and improving significantly regarding the previous year in most rated indicators.
This year, ULisboa kept its position in two indicators and improved in four out of the six. Namely, the number of Highly Cited authors in the Clarivate Analytics list, the number of articles in scientific publications of Nature and Science, and the number of articles indexed in the Science Citation Index-Expanded and in the Social Science Citation Index. An enhancement in performance per capita at the University is also to be noted.
Within the top 500 universities in the World, you will also find University of Porto (301-400), University of Minho, and Nova University Lisbon (401-500). University of Coimbra ranks within 501 and 600 and University of Aveiro within 601 and 700.
The ranking is updated annually and this year’s edition analyzed over 1800 Universities do select the top 1000 based on criteria of evaluation of the quality of education, teaching, research and performance per capita.
Harvard University is, for the 17th time, leader in the world ranking, followed by Stanford University and the University of Cambridge. ETH Zurich leads European Universities in 19th place, followed by the University of Copenhagen (26th place). 14 Universities are first timers in the top 500, and over 50 also in the top 1000.
