As part of the Program in Theater Studies, the Doctorate in Theater Studies offers advanced training based on training in new areas and research methodologies on theatre, performing arts and performance studies, aiming at the production of original and high-level knowledge. International. It encourages collaborative participation in research projects, the intersection with other disciplines and the insertion in practical contexts of artistic creation and cultural production that will enhance academic skills.
Taught by a specialized and internationally recognized faculty, it allows a close relationship with the research developed in particular by the Center for Theater Studies of the Faculty of Arts and humanities of the University of Lisbon (CET-FLUL).
The Doctorate in Theater Studies is organized in six semesters (180 ECTS). It starts with attending a doctoral course (120 ECTS), consisting of four semesters. This is followed by two semesters of autonomous research and writing of the doctoral thesis, under the supervision of one or more professors (60 ECTS).
The PhD offers specialisation in the scientific domain of Theatre Studies; it promotes research in (and on) institutions, thus linking the University to theatre in its various aspects; it grants proficiency in a conceptual and methodological system that gives an understanding of the field of research, questioning it and assessing its importance and value; it stimulates original research on artistic practice within the disciplinary plurality in which it exists (related to literature, visual arts, music, dance, etc.) and in the various relations it establishes with society(in the cultural, sociological, ethical, economic, aesthetic domains, etc.); it helps master a well-structured, personal thinking, and the ability to express it both orally at (national and international) conferences and congresses, and in written essays for (national or foreign) publication.
