Research Units

The University of Lisbon plays a central role in the Portuguese research and innovation system. The 70 Research and Development Units (R&D) at the University of Lisbon financed by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) represent 22% of the total in Portugal, while its researchers and funding reach 29% of the respective national total.

Evaluation

70 R&D Units at University of Lisbon were evaluated by FCT in 2019, which represent 22% of all the units funded in Portugal and 57% in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. Of that total, 34 were rated Excellent, 28 Very Good and 8 Good.
R&D Units are distributed by scientific domains such as Natural Sciences (33%), Humanities (23%), Social Sciences (19%), Engineering and Technology Sciences (14%), Medical and Health Sciences (7%) and Agricultural Sciences (4%).

Researchers

The 5.345 FTE researchers reported as integrated in R&D Units at the University of Lisbon represent about 29% of the 18.523 researchers in Portugal considered by FCT, and 70% of those working in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. These are distributed mostly in Natural Sciences (35%), followed by Engineering and Technology Sciences (20%).

Funding

In 2020-2023, FCT funded R&D Units at the University of Lisbon with about 125 M€, representing 29% of the national total funding (direct base and programmatic), and 73% of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. Natural Sciences and Engineering and Technology Sciences are the two most funded scientific domains at the University of Lisbon with over 74 M€, wich represents about 59% of the University of Lisbon total.
