Africa & Portugal: Knowledge, Mobility, and University Future

The conference provides a forum for open discussion on the role of universities in deepening relations between Portugal and Portuguese-speaking African countries. Covering topics ranging from public policy and academic mobility to student experiences and integration challenges, the event brings together institutional and personal perspectives to reflect, in an accessible and strategic manner, on the present and future of the Portuguese-speaking academic community.

The event will also unite the academic community for contemplation regarding university policy, mobility, and integration of African students in Portuguese culture.

This initiative is part of the Sem Margem (No Margin) programme, the Semana de Africa na ULisboa (Africa Week at ULisboa), which is centred around reflection, cultural value, and critical thinking, through lectures, talks, exhibitions, dance, music, and gastronomy.

Policies, mobility, and cooperation within Portuguese university soil

This panel examines how public, diplomatic, and academic institutions can contribute to a more accessible and inclusive Portuguese-speaking higher education area. The discussion addresses academic mobility, special admission schemes, bureaucratic challenges for international students and opportunities for cooperation between universities and governments. At the same time, it reflects on higher education as a bridge between countries, promoting shared knowledge and strengthening cultural and scientific relations within the Portuguese-speaking world.

Trajectories, challenges, and integration of African students

This panel focuses on the real-life experiences of African students in Portuguese higher education, bringing to the discussion the academic, social, and personal experiences linked to their mobility journeys. Drawing on testimonies from students, alumni and support staff, the panel addresses the challenges of arrival and integration — from bureaucracy, housing, and academic adjustment to issues of belonging, identity, and support networks. Beyond these obstacles, it also highlights stories of participation, resilience, and the contribution of African students to diversity and transformation within universities in Portugal.
