Integration of students into Higher Education – Training in Transversal Competences

Aware of the challenges facing first-year students, the University of Lisbon offers a range of initiatives aimed at promoting the development of transversal skills.

The transition to Higher Education presents numerous challenges for which many students are not yet fully prepared. These challenges arise from adapting to a new and less familiar environment than Secondary Education, the fast pace of classes, and greater flexibility in time and task management, which is accompanied by an increase in individual responsibility.

The University of Lisbon, in collaboration with its 19 Schools, promotes training activities with the aim of equipping 1st year students with transversal skills that will help them overcome these challenges and boost their academic success. Additionally, the University has developed different types of resources to complement the training (in-person or online), such as videos, apps, podcasts, implementation toolkits and online resource centres.

Teachers’ Resources Centre: Supporting Inclusive Practices

The University of Lisbon (ULisboa) guides its actions by the principles of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility (IDEA), with the aim of continuously improving its structures and processes.

As part of the Promoting Success and Reducing Dropout in Higher Education” programme, ULisboa has established the Resource Centre to support inclusive practices across its Schools.

An open-access repository that provides resources and practical guides on various topics, supporting schools, teachers and the wider academic community in promoting inclusive practices.

  • To support ULisboa Schools in the creation and development of local Resource Centres, adapted to their specific needs and contexts.
  • To promote information and awareness sessions on Special Educational Needs (SEN) and inclusive environments, strengthening the capacity of the academic community through the provision of open-access guides and online resources.
  • To equip teachers with inclusive pedagogical tools and strategies, enabling them to effectively support students with SEN and thereby enrich the learning experiences of all students.
  • To contribute to a more inclusive and equitable academic community, ensuring the participation, continued enrolment, and academic success of students with SEN and other groups with specific conditions.

  • ULisboa Schools seeking to create or enhance their local Resource Centres and to promote their use within their communities.
  • Teachers looking for concrete strategies to support students with SEN.
  • The academic community as an active agent in reflecting on, designing and implementing pedagogical practices, and in ensuring that all academic activities promote inclusion across the institution.
