Maria José Chambel
Biographical Note

Maria José Chambel is a full professor at the Faculty of Psychology of the University of Lisbon (FPUL), where she coordinates the Master’s degree in Psychology of Human Resources, Work and Organisations and co-coordinates the Master’s degree in Psychology in Crisis and Emergency Situations. Since 2022, she has been a consultant to the Directorate-General for Health in the field of occupational health. She is a member of the Centre for Research in Psychological Sciences at the University of Lisbon and has participated in and coordinated various research projects. Her main research interests include the analysis of the work context and its influence on the stress and well-being of workers in high-risk environments (e.g. firefighters, military personnel, healthcare professionals). In 2017, she was awarded the University of Lisbon Scientific Prize in the field of psychology. From 2019 to 2021, she was a member of the Technical-Scientific Working Group responsible for drafting the 3rd Technical Guide to Occupational Health on the health surveillance of workers exposed to psychosocial risk factors, appointed by the Directorate-General for Health – Coordination Team of the National Occupational Health Programme. In 2025 and 2026, she was included in the international list of the best scientists in psychology. She currently coordinates the project established between FPUL and the Directorate-General for National Defence Resources with the aim of identifying the risk factors for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Deployed National Forces.
