Applications are now open for three international in-person training programmes aimed at PhD students and early-stage researchers, PhD supervisors, and academic and administrative staff.
The training sessions take place in Wrocław, Poland, and Turin, Italy, and combine sessions with experts, interactive workshops, the sharing of best practices, field trips, and networking opportunities with participants from different universities in the Unite! alliance.
For participants from the University of Lisbon, participation is free, and travel and accommodation costs are covered, in accordance with the Unite! Widening guidelines. The selection of participants will be confirmed at a later date by the organizers.
Widening Training @Wrocław – Onboarding Early-Stage Researchers
October 21–23, 2026 | Wrocław University of Science and Technology, Poland
This three-day training program is aimed at early-career researchers, preferably doctoral students, and is designed to support their first steps on the path to a Ph.D., with the guiding question: How to navigate a research career?
Throughout the workshop, participants will address topics such as:
- defining a research question and building a supervisory team;
- setting goals and establishing realistic milestones for the Ph.D.;
- developing skills and planning an academic and professional career;
- identifying resources, skills, and strengths as researchers;
- balancing research, teaching, and personal life;
- peer learning and building international networks.

Widening Training @Wrocław – Train Supervisors for PhD Collaborations

Designed for doctoral advisors, regardless of their level of experience, this training focuses on developing strategies and skills to support early-career researchers and guide them through the entire research process during their doctoral studies.
Participants will have the opportunity to explore:
- strategies for integrating and supporting new doctoral students;
- setting expectations and developing individual development plans;
- techniques for providing constructive feedback;
- fostering researchers’ autonomy and critical thinking;
- guidance on career development and identifying transferable skills;
- strategies for supporting different career paths, both within and outside academia;
- sharing best practices and supervision challenges among Unite! universities.

Widening Training @PoliTO – Doctoral School International Impact and Attractiveness
November 18–20, 2026 | Polytechnic University of Turin, Italy
This three-day training program is designed for researchers and academic or administrative professionals involved in doctoral education and aims to strengthen the international profile and appeal of doctoral schools.
Through expert presentations, peer learning, and interactive workshops, participants will:
- gain a better understanding of the European framework for international doctoral education;
- explore strategies to increase the internationalization and attractiveness of doctoral programs;
- learn about international models and examples of strategic partnerships;
- identify opportunities and challenges related to internationalization;
- strengthen collaboration and the sharing of experiences among professionals at Unite! universities.
- To actively participate in the workshops, applicants should be familiar with their institution’s internationalization strategy for doctoral education, including its main strengths, challenges, and strategic objectives.
