Jorge Relvas
Biographical Note

Jorge Relvas is an Associate Professor with Habilitation at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, which he joined in November 1987, and a researcher at Instituto Dom Luiz (IDL-LA). He was member of the administration board of the Foundation of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (2011-2015) and then member of the executive committee of FCiências.ID (2015-2019). He was vice-dean of the Faculty of Sciences between 2022 and 2025, and, since 2010, he is president of the Lousal Ciência Viva Centre – Mine of Science, in a former mining village in the municipality of Grândola, where an integrated social, environmental and heritage rehabilitation program is underway.

Between 2003 and 2019, he was a member of the council, vice-president, and president of the Society for Geology Applied to Mineral Deposits. He was a member of the editorial board of Boletin Geologico y Minero, Spain, and of the organizing committees of many international scientific meetings. He has participated in 15 field trips to international mining districts and 5 oceanographic missions, where he was chief scientist on several dives in manned and remotely operated submersibles on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. He is the author of dozens of indexed scientific articles and hundreds of scientific comunications at international conferences, many of them as a keynote speaker. 

He was awarded the ‘Best Scientific Article in Mineralium Deposita’, in 2002, and two of his articles were featured on the cover of Economic Geology, in 2006. He was distinguished with the ‘KGHM-SGA Kroll Silver Medal’ by the Society for Geology Applied to Mineral Deposits in 2021.
