Rui Tato Marinho
Biographical Note

Rui Tato Marinho is a gastroenterologist, hepatologist, and clinical addictologist, dedicated exclusively to his hospital practice since 1991.

He earned his PhD from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon (FMUL) in 2002 with a maximun score. He has been a Full Professor at FMUL since 2025, where he has taught since 1987 and held pedagogical and scientific coordination positions, including directing the Center for Palliative Medicine and the Master's Program in Palliative Care, regency of Professionalism and Hepatology.

In the hospital setting, he served as Director of the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Service and, later, Clinical Director of the North Lisbon University Hospital Center and the Santa Maria Local Health Unit. He is a Senior Graduate Assistant in the Hospital Career, with extensive experience in clinical management and applied ethics.

He has a significant track record in international clinical research, serving as national principal investigator in 17 multicenter trials between 2013 and 2023, in the areas of hepatitis C, hepatitis B, and hepatocellular carcinoma. He has over 150 indexed articles, including publications in the New England Journal of Medicine, and has extensive experience as a scientific reviewer for international journals.

He was editor-in-chief of two national journals indexed in international databases: Acta Médica Portuguesa and GE - Portuguese Journal of Gastroenterology.

Institutionally, he was President of the Portuguese Society of Gastroenterology, the Portuguese Association for the Study of the Liver, the College of Hepatology of the Portuguese Medical Association, and the National Commission of Reference Centers. He has also served as Director of the National Viral Hepatitis Program (DGS) since 2021.

He was an elected member of the General Council of the University of Lisbon from 2021 to 2025. He collaborates with the Institute of Criminal Law and Criminal Sciences of the Faculty of Law. He has collaborated with international institutions such as the European Commission as an expert, the World Health Organization, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, the United European Association of Gastroenterology, the Viral Hepatitis Prevention Board, and the European Liver Patient Association (advisory to the Governing Board). He is a

Fellow of the European Council of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases.

He is President of CEIC (National Ethics Commission for Clinical Research).

He has received 34 awards, including the Medal of Merit from the Portuguese Medical Association in 2015.
