Workshop A
Oral communication in science – presentations for audiences, narratives and non-verbal language
Local: Great Hall
Synopsis: Public speaking, whether to three or three hundred people, is an inevitable experience for scientists. Oral communications are moments of presence and impact. In this module, we will explore techniques for building an engaging narrative, practise stage performance, and discuss the strategic use of visual aids to enhance the sharing experience. The goal is to develop confidence and clarity in the transmission of knowledge, making each presentation unique and memorable.
Trainers: Joana Lobo Antunes (Técnico-ULisboa), Ana Moutinho (ISEG-ULisboa)
Workshop B
Writing about science for lay audiences – principles of science journalism
Local: Rectors Room
Synopsis: Scientific communication is essential both among peers and for the general public, but making it accessible without losing rigour is a challenge. This module will address strategies for communicating science clearly and effectively, exploring the role of science journalism, the simplification of jargon, and good practices in knowledge transfer. In addition to useful tips, practical exercises will be carried out to reinforce communication skills in different contexts.
Trainers: Teresa Firmino (Público), Sílvio Mendes (Técnico-ULisboa)
Workshop C
Visual communication in science – slides and posters, other visual aids
Local: Conference Room
Synopsis: The organisation of visual information is essential for scientific communication. This module will cover principles of design, visual communication and data visualisation to structure and prioritise visual elements effectively. Examples include posters, slides, infographics, relational maps, mood boards, and diagrams, tools that enable researchers to convey scientific concepts and complex information in an accessible and expressive manner, adapting them to different media and contexts.
Trainers: Sónia Rafael (FBA-ULisboa), Pedro Duarte de Almeida (FBA-ULisboa)
Note: This is an official ULisboa event and photographs and videos will be taken for ULisboa's institutional communication purposes across its various media channels.
