The University of Lisbon is celebrating the World Creativity and Innovation Day emphasising its central role on the national and European entrepreneur ecosystem, reinforced by the recent studies and initiatives that underline the vigour, diversity and global impact in its academic community.
The data published in the ULisboa Startup Impact Report 2025, produced in partnership with Dealroom, confirms ULisboa as Portugal’s most entrepreneurial university, ranking first in Startup Portugal’s Entrepreneurial Universities Ranking. The presentation of this study took place on 29 January, at the Centro de Congressos (Congress Center) of the Pavilion of Portugal.
ULisboa establishes itself as a driving force of innovation in Portugal, gathering indicators that reflect a decade of continuous growth:
- More than 1.000 startups funded by students, professors, researchers and alumni present in more than 40 countries.
- Four of the six portuguese unicorns - Talkdesk, Tekever, OutSystems and Anchorage Digital - have origin in academic paths connected with ULisboa
- Over €850M in Venture Capital has been raised since 2024, reinforcing international interest in this ecosystem.
- More than 36 thousand jobs opportunities worldwide offered by startups connected with the University.
Since 2020, one in four Lisbon’s startups was founded by ULisboa’s alumni, accounting for 45% of local venture capital.
ULisboa stands out for its capacity to transform scientific knowledge into applied innovation:
- +170 academic spinouts, representing 75% of Lisbon’s spinouts
- Key impact areas: Health, Entrepreneurial Software, Deeptech, Climate Tech, Spacetech and Crypto/Defi, reflecting national excellence in STEM and the commitment to emerging technologies
- More than 180 startups founded by women, reinforcing the commitment to diversity and inclusion in the entrepreneurial ecosystem.
ULisboa is also acknowledged in the public media, with a participation on the programme The Next Big Idea, where projects linked with the university have been distinguished for their originality and market potential.
