The University of Lisbon reinforces its national leadership in research

The Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) has released the provisional results of the evaluation of Research Units for the 2025-2029 multiannual funding. Of the 313 units evaluated, 69 rely on the participation of the University of Lisbon (ULisboa), representing 22 per cent of the national total.

The results highlight the quality of research at ULisboa: 30 units were rated ‘Excellent’ (43 per cent) and 31 ‘Very Good’ (45 per cent), totalling 88 per cent in the top categories. Six units were classified as ‘Good’. All ULisboa schools have at least one unit evaluated, with the  IST Técnico Lisboa (20 units), the Faculty of Sciences (14) and the School of Arts and Humanities (10) standing out. ULisboa units are present in 29 of the FCT evaluation panels, with Physics being the most represented area, with nine units.

Compared to the previous cycle (2020), there have been significant changes, including the creation of new units and mergers. Among the new centres are the INESC INOV – Research & Development Laboratory (IST) and the Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine (IGC + iMM). The Ethnomusicology Institute – Center for Studies in Music and Dance, with the participation of the Faculty of Human Kinetics, has also been included in the ULisboa universe.

Out of the total of 21,046 doctoral researchers in the units evaluated, 5,404 are associated with ULisboa (26 per cent), of which 4,948 are eligible for core funding. Units associated with ULisboa should receive 93.3 million euros in core funding (27 per cent of the national total). Adding programmatic support and RRF funding for equipment, the figure rises to 167.8 million euros, maintaining the same proportion.

These results confirm ULisboa's central role in the national scientific system and reflect the consistent impact of its research in multiple areas of knowledge.
