Winner of the 2024 Universidade de Lisboa Award: Irene Fonseca

The awarding of the Universidade de Lisboa (ULisboa) Award to Irene Fonseca recognises her scientific leadership on a global scale and her decisive impact on contemporary mathematics.  It is an acknowledgment of a career marked by rigour and merit which started at the University of Lisbon and has taken Portugal to the highest level of international science.

Professor Irene Fonseca is one of the most influential figures in contemporary mathematics, internationally recognised for her scientific leadership and the impact of her contributions at the interface between Mathematical Analysis, Materials Science, and Computer Vision. Her career exemplifies exceptional intellectual rigour and a constant commitment to academic excellence. Nationwide, she stands out unequivocally as the leading figure in Portuguese mathematics, both for the quality of her scientific output and for the institutional impact she has generated.

Professor Fonseca’s academic career began at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, where she got a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 1980. She then moved to the United States, obtaining her master’s degree (1983) and PhD (1985) at the University of Minnesota.

Upon completing renowned postdoctoral internships in Paris, Fonseca was admitted into the Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in 1987. In 1993, she became Full Professor and, in 2014, was honoured with the title of University Professor, the highest division of the institution. In 2018, she became holder of the Kavčić-Moura University Professorship. Irene Fonseca has been the head of Center for Nonlinear Analysis (CNA) since 1998, an institution she has consolidated as a worldwide distinguished centre of excellence. 

Fonseca’s scientific activity is well-known for its density, depth, and diversity: focused on Calculus of Variations and Partial Differential Equations (PDE), it extends to areas of interface with physics, engineering, and various applications. The impact of her work extends far beyond the strict domain of mathematics, as demonstrated by extraordinary metrics for the field.

She is the author of more than 150 articles published in leading scientific journals, such as Archive for Rational Mechanics and Analysis and SIAM Journal on Mathematical.

The Universidade de Lisboa Award, sponsored by Caixa Geral de Depósitos, intends to distinguish and award an individual of Portuguese or foreign nationality, who contributed notably to the progress and greatness of Science or Culture, and to the international projection of Portugal.

Over the course of its ten editions, Adriano Moreira, Nuno Teotónio Pereira, Jorge Calado, Maria de Sousa, António Borges Coelho, Gonçalo M. Tavares, António Guterres, Maria do Carmo Fonseca, Luís Portela and Vítor Cardoso have been honoured. 

The 2024 edition featured a jury composed of a Chair appointed by the Rector of the University of Lisbon, a Vice-Chair appointed by Caixa Geral de Depósitos, and members chosen from among personalities of recognised scientific or cultural merit. The jury members were: Luís Manuel dos Anjos Ferreira (Chair), Emílio Rui Vilar (Vice-Chair), António Cruz Serra, António M. Feijó, António Sampaio da Nóvoa, Joana M. Amaro da Costa Luz Carneiro, João Vieira Pereira, Filipa Urbano Calvão, Maria Isabel Stilwell, Maria Leonor Beleza, and Maria Manuel Mota.
