The Planetary Health PhD Programme at the University of Lisbon offers a unique, multidisciplinary approach to graduate training. Applications are open until February 20th.
Launched in 2025, the Planetary Health PhD Programme at the University of Lisbon is designed to equip students to make original and significant contributions to the field of Planetary Health.
This programme brings together expertise from all 19 Schools of the University, featuring a diverse faculty representing a wide range of specialties and perspectives.
The PhD is organized into six distinct specialities: Climate Change and Health; Global Health; Health in Extreme Environments; Policies and Governance in Planetary Health; Tropical Health and Urban Health.
During the first semester, students actively shape their academic journey. They follow a curriculum that provides a broad foundation in Planetary Health, without a formal commitment to a specific project. This allows students to explore potential research topics and connect with advisors during the first year. By the end of the first semester, students begin developing their dissertation projects under the guidance of their chosen supervisors.
This individualised approach, supported by comprehensive guidance and career development resources, ensures a strong foundation for a successful academic and professional path. The programme fosters a supportive, inclusive, and collaborative environment, emphasizing diverse thinking, positive behaviour, and well-being as core elements for creativity, critical thinking, and leadership in Planetary Health.
Some of the highlights of this program are access to cutting-edge research units and infrastructures; enrollment at a top European university like ULisboa with a strong international environment; an individualized curricular plan with intensive course-work training in the first semester; the opportunity to choose the PhD research project and supervisors; being part of a vibrant academic community, with seminars, workshops and orientation events, as well as an active PhD student community organising and participating in seminars, courses, and social activities; assistance with applications and administrative support.
The application process has its evaluation based on Curriculum Vitae and letter of motivation, with interviews for preselected candidates and the enrollment invitation for top-ranked candidates.
